Summer Term 1

Welcome back everyone and I hope you have enjoyed a lovely Easter break. This term our topic to help inspire our learning will be Stories from around the World.

Week beginning Monday 19th April

We have started our topic this week with a story all the way from Kenya in Africa, Handa's Surprise. We enjoyed using our senses to explore some of the fruits from Handas basket, learnt a new playground game all the way from Kenya called Elephant Stampede and learnt all about the Kenyan flag and how each colour represents something different. We also spent some time this week sharing ideas and thoughts about what other countries we would like to learn about this term, with all the children sharing ideas. In maths we have been learning all about addition, the symbol, the different vocabulary and how adding changes amounts. It has been a fabulous first week back, well done everyone!

Week beginning Monday 26th April

This week has been full of new and exciting learning opportunities, our story this week was a story from Brazil called 'The party in the sky', all about how the toad became all lumpy and bumpy. We did some writing about the story this week and had a go at creating our own ideas for the story about how else the Toad could get to the party. We've learnt a lot about the Amazon Rain forest and know that is has four layers and what animals live in each layer, we also made our own rain forests in a jar that are displayed in our classroom.

Week Beginning Monday 3rd May

We have been learning about Australia this week, with the Aboriginal tale of how The Kangaroos got their tales. Children have enjoyed using the story to influence their small world play and acting out in the role-play area. Our focus in maths this week has been sharing, fairly and answering sharing story problems.

Week Beginning Monday 10th May

What an exciting week, we had a visit from the Farm on Wheels on Tuesday. We met some lambs, a hen and her chicks, rabbits, a rat and a goat and her kids. Our story this week was The Three Billy Goats Gruff, a story well known but we did not know it originated from Norway.

  Week Beginning Monday 17th May

We enjoyed the story ‘The Clever Monkey’ from West Africa this week, we have had great fun using the puppet theatre to act out the story and have had some beautiful adaptations of the story. Our maths focus this week has been on learning and recalling our number bonds to 10. Please remember to read as much as possible with your children at home, reading books are expected back in school on a Thursday.

           Week Beginning Monday 24th May

Well done all of reception on a fantastic half term learning all about different parts of the world and stories that come from them. I think our favourite was definitely learning about the Rainforest in Brazil and all of the animals that live in it. For our final week of term, we choose England and the story was George and the Dragon, we have had fun making dragon crafts and learning about things in England from the past. See you after the break and enjoy!
