Let's put on our capes and discover our super powers as we search for an answer to the question 'What is a superhero?'
This half term our art based unit will begin with a The children will become superheroes for the day! They will have the opportunity to dress up and complete a super hunt, finding clues and evidence that superheroes have been busy exploring our school. To start our art focus we will look at comics to see where superhero stories began. We will look closely at the artist Roy Lichtenstein, who was famous for creating American pop art.
The children will have the opportunity to use and experiment with bold colours, creating colour wheels and exploring different combinations. They will also be creating their own pop art and designing both superheroes and masks. We look forward to sharing our creations with you!
In English we will be focusing on narrative, which will be linked to our cornerstones topic 'Superheroes!' We will be learning about the different elements that make up a story, then adding our own ideas and descriptions. We will be creating pictorial story maps to support our story telling.
The children will be encouraged to spell their common exception words for their year group accurately, and we will focus on using capital letters, full stops and questions marks correctly.
During reading we will continue to use VIPERS to continue to build a deeper understanding of the texts we read. We will do this through a variety of practical games, focused reading tasks and guided activities.
The children will also be encouraged to form their letters correctly using cursive script.
Our focus this half term will be on money and place value. We will be building on the skills we have previously learnt, using problem solving and reasoning to deepen our understanding of the mathematical concepts. We will be learning about the value of coins and notes, practising making different totals of money and investigating different ways to make specific amounts. These are fantastic skills to practise when you are out and about in a real life context.
We will also be looking at the place value of numbers with two digits. To do this we will be completing a variety of practical activities where the children will have the opportunity to make groups of ten using different resources. We will be comparing numbers according to their value and deciding which amounts are more and less.
In Science we will be focusing on animals. The children will learn about a variety of familiar and less familiar animals, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. They will identify and name, look closely at and compare and contrast many different animals. They will name their body parts, describe their physical features and mimic how they move. The children will also be introduced to the terms ‘carnivore’, ‘herbivore’ and ‘omnivore’.
