Autumn 1

Autumn Term 1

At the start of every new school term, we will embrace new learning and adventures and delve deeper into the Year 1/2 curriculum! This term, we are excited to be learning about 'Dinosaurs’.

Reading: Here at St Matthew’s, reading is a really important part of your child's education and helps them across all curriculum areas. This half-term, and linking to our writing topic, we are reading Dinosaur Poems by John Foster. The children have had great fun reading, acting out poems and demonstrating their ability to find information in the text.

We always encourage the children to read for pleasure at home at least twice a week and ask for parents to record this in their child’s reading journal.

Writing:In writing, the children have been focussing on Poetry and Riddles. As a whole class, we have been analysing a selection of poems about dinosaurs. Here, the children have been learning how to rhyme, identify patterns and key features and even use drama to imitate and perform.

Maths: Throughout the year, your children will become mathematicians! The children will begin learning about place value in Maths where they will learn the value of digits, before moving onto addition and subtraction.

Please ensure your children are practising their 2x, 5x and 10x tables as regularly as possible.

Science: In Science, we are investigating plants and animals. The children will be exploring the life cycle of plants, animal categories, the food chain and many other exciting themes. The children have even created their own leaf art which I have attached some pictures of below.

Special Studies: In Special Studies, our focus is History. The children will be exploring and examining a range of fossils and begin to recognise their link to dinosaurs and also become familiar with the history of Mary Anning and her great dinosaur finds! The children will also be creating their own museum café where they will have the opportunity to create and bake their own fossil and dinosaur biscuits.

PE: PE is an important part of the National Curriculum. PE enables the children to acquire and develop new skills and learn how to work as part of a team inside and outside the classroom.

PE slots do change regularly so please ensure your child's PE kit is brought into school on a Monday and taken home on a Friday. Children will take part in 2 x PE lessons a week and need both indoor and outdoor kit throughout the year, so please remember to label kit with your child’s name.

Forest School: Children will take part in Forest School once a week, every Friday afternoon. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to explore a new and different environment where they develop key skills. Please ensure your child’s Forest School kit is in school every Friday to avoid any disappointment of being unable to take part.
