A very big welcome to the Year 1/2 children!
I am delighted to be teaching the Year 1/2 children and look forward to the exciting year we have ahead! In the classroom, we have a fantastic team where Mrs Jamesnield and Mrs Urey will be working alongside the children and I this year.
Below, you will find some important information about the children in 1/2 NP. Throughout the year, I will be updating the class page with important curriculum information and work that the children have completed. On each half termly page, you can also find important dates for our class. However, please do take advantage of the Friday feature our school offers for key school dates and events.
Reading: Here at St Matthew’s, reading is a really important part of your child's education and helps them across all curriculum areas. We always encourage the children to read for pleasure at home at least twice a week and ask for parents to record this in their child’s reading journal.
Alongside reading for pleasure, we also take part in two weekly reading lessons within class. This is a great opportunity for the children to demonstrate their understanding of a text through various ways, such as, discussing characters and main events, drama and imitation, answering comprehension questions and so much more, which the children take great enjoyment from.
Handwriting: The children work endlessly hard all year round here at St Matthew’s to improve their handwriting. At this stage, the children will be practicing to form their letters accurately whilst adapting to our new cursive style. Any extra support at home is greatly appreciated.
SATs: All year 2 children across the country will take part in standardised end of key stage tests in May each year. These will test areas taught across the whole key stage 1 phase and help to ascertain if a child has made progress. Please do not worry or panic about these as children are well prepared for them and practise them in a fun and engaging way.
PE: Children will take part in 2 x PE lessons a week and need both indoor and outdoor kit throughout the year, so please remember to label kit with your child’s name. PE slots do change regularly so please ensure your child's PE kit is brought into school on a Monday and taken home on a Friday.
