Towers, Tunnels and Turrets
This half term our topic is Towers, Tunnels and Turrets, which is a design and technology based topic. Alongside this we will be reading lots of traditional tales, such as The 3 Little Pigs, The Gingerbread Man and 3 Billy Goats Gruff.
English We will be looking at the features of letters, specifically focusing on letters of complaint. We will use the traditional tale 3 Billy Goats Gruff to model our own letters, thinking about what makes a good letter of complaint and how to use the features we learn.
We will also be looking at the features of narrative writing and using a range of traditional Tales to write our own narrative. Alongside this, we will also begin to look at some of the Year 2 punctuation and grammar, such as different sentence types, different types of verbs and co-ordination.
Maths We will be focusing on place value this half term, building on what children have learnt in Year 1. The children we be learning about tens and ones in 2-digit numbers, how to partition these in different ways and how to compare and represent 2-digit numbers. Towards the end of the half term, we will begin to look at addition and subtraction using our place value knowledge. Each Friday, we will also practise our arithmetic skills and our times tables.
Science We will be focusing on living things and their habitats, learning about different habitats around the world and food webs. We will be consolidating learning from Year 1, looking at where we can live and how animals adapt to their environment. We look forward to lots of practical learning around our school.
Special Studies We will be looking at what materials are best to build different structures and learning about their properties. We will be building different structures, understanding how the can be made stronger, stiffer or more sturdy. This is another practical topic, where we hope to build lots of structures within our classroom.
Homework is due in on Monday 21st October. Please see your child's homework book for full details. Please remember, children also need to read at least twice weekly and practise their times tables.
