Our vision at St Matthews

At St Matthew’s Primary school, our school vision is to encourage all children to flourish spiritually, morally, emotionally, physically and intellectually in all aspects of life demonstrating perseverance and resilience; this is emulated across all curriculum areas.

Our aims at St Matthew's

The Spanish curriculum ensures all pupils:

  • Have access to a rich and varied MFL Curriculum that ignites the imagination.
  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

We believe that the early acquisition of Spanish will facilitate the learning of other foreign languages later in life. We will prepare children for the KS3 language curriculum to enable them to transfer their knowledge and skills confidently and successfully, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries when they leave school.

Our Intent

Intent
At St Matthew’s Primary school, our school vision is to encourage all children to flourish spiritually, morally, emotionally, physically and intellectually in all aspects of life demonstrating perseverance and resilience; this is emulated across all curriculum areas.

The MFL curriculum intent at St Matthew’s provides a high-quality languages education that fosters pupils’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.
We will prepare children for the KS3 language curriculum to enable them to transfer their knowledge and skills confidently and successfully,
equipping pupils to study and work in other countries when they leave school.

Implementation
At St Matthew’s, we teach Spanish across Key Stage 2. The school uses the Primary Languages scheme of
work to support the teaching and learning of Spanish. This scheme provides clear progression for the development of speaking and listening and vocabulary acquisition.

Through using the Primary Languages scheme of work as the basis for planning, teachers can deliver a sequence of core learning where skills are developed, and progression is clear.
• All staff and pupils are clear about what it is that they are learning and can see how previous
learning is being built upon.
• Pupils in KS2 access Spanish once a fortnight developing knowledge and skills through the
following approaches: to Games –

o develop vocabulary through repetition, reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

o Role-play – these should relate to the situations the children may find themselves in the future.
o Action songs and rhymes – to develop phonetic skills, memory skills and to further vocabulary.
o Reading and writing quality materials.
o We build children’s confidence through praise for any contribution they make in the foreign language, however tentative.
We base the teaching on the 2014 National Curriculum delivered via the Primary Languages scheme. We have
adapted this to the context of our school. This provides teachers with clear progression grids and content for teaching and learning.

Impact
Through the high quality first teaching of Spanish taking place, we will see the impact of the subject in the following ways:
• Children will become aware that a language has a structure, and that the structure differs from one
language to another.

• Children will develop their language and communication through development of the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
• Children will enrich their language learning by developing an understanding of the Spanish
culture.
• Progression through Spanish will be evident in the development of key skills and acquisition of main
vocabulary, demonstrated through pupil voice and within written work in pupil books.
• Language skills acquired will transfer to KS3 effectively and successfully and pupils will be well prepared to continue and develop their language skills further.
