Behaviour Principles
A statement of behaviour principles written by governors is required for all maintained schools. These principles guide the Headteacher and staff in developing and implementing the school's behaviour policy and procedures.
At St Matthew’s Primary School our principles reflect our school values, our 3 R’s – Respect, Responsibility and Resilience and our whole school behaviour standards.
We want to create an environment where all stakeholders are respectful of each other’s similarities and differences, take responsibility for our behaviours, actions and responses and are resilient in our approach to all aspects of school and wider life.
The following principles are:
- Every pupil understands they have the right to feel safe, valued and respected, and to be able to learn free from the disruption of others.
- The learning and recreational environments should be safe and secure for pupils and staff. Pupils should be encouraged to support the vision and values of the school especially the need for high standards of behaviour.
- Staff consistently set an excellent example to pupils in line with the agreed behaviour standards.
- The behaviour policy is understood by pupils and staff.
- There is a clarity of expectations, rights, responsibilities, school rules and agreed behaviour standards that are understood by all staff, pupils and parents/carers.
- Behaviour pathways and descriptors are used by all staff to support consistent behaviour management.
- Praise, rewards and sanctions are used consistently by staff, in line with the behaviour policy.
- Pupils are supported to take responsibility for their actions, and St. Matthew’s School and associated services will support children in managing their behaviour especially those with additional needs or SEND.
- Matthew’s will monitor behaviour patterns and analyse trends in order to intervene effectively.
- Parents and carers are involved in the management and resolution of behaviour incidents to foster good relationships between the school and home.
- All pupils, staff, parents/carers and visitors are free from any form of discrimination.
- The governing board also emphasises that violence or threatening behaviour will not be tolerated in any circumstances.
- This written statement of behaviour principles is reviewed and approved by the full governing board annually.
- Staff may use reasonable physical force to protect people and property from harm.
- Trained staff may use Safety Intervention procedures to protect an individual pupil from harm.
- The Headteacher may search pupils' property if there is reasonable suspicion of related misbehaviour.
- Staff should have the power to discipline beyond the school gate in clearly specified circumstances where misbehaviour could harm another pupil or the school's reputation.
These guiding principles should be read in conjunction with the school's behaviour policy and procedures and the school’s Behaviour Standards.
