St Matthew's C.E Primary School

“I can do all things because Christ gives me strength” Philippians 4:13

Our Vision for Physical Education

At St Matthew’s Primary School and Nursery Centre, we aim to provide physical education (PE) and school sports through a broad and balanced programme of activities. The purpose of PE is to enable all pupils to work towards becoming independently active within the school and wider community.

Our PE curriculum aims to develop a variety of skills as well as physical competence in a range of sports.  Areas such as health education, safe practise and personal & social skills are also accessed regularly throughout each topic in every year group.  Emphasis is placed on the process of planning, performing and self-evaluating within a wide range of sporting activities such as dance, athletics, ball skills, gymnastics, karate and swimming.

Intent

At St Matthew’s Primary school, our school vision is to encourage all children to flourish spiritually, morally, emotionally, physically and intellectually in all aspects of life demonstrating perseverance and resilience; this is emulated across all curriculum areas.

At St Matthew’s it is our intent that all children will be ‘lifelong participants’ in sport, developing skills and abilities that enable them to apply their learning to a range of different sports or activities. Our PE curriculum teaches the children life values such as how to co-operate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity in sport as well as learning key skills (being able
to swim) to keep them stay safe. By providing children with opportunities to compete in sport and team building activities, pupils at St Matthew’s build their own character and embed values such as fairness, resilience and respect. We deliver high-quality physical education curriculum, supported by the ‘Get Set 4 PE’ programme to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in a range of progressive competitive sports and other physically demanding activities.

Implementation

At St Matthew’s our children participate in 2 hours of high-quality PE and sporting activities weekly. Physical Education is provided through a broad and balanced curriculum of physical activities, including gymnastics, dance, athletics, games, swimming, Karate and opportunities to explore other sports. The teaching of PE is supported and mapped out coherently through the use of the Get Set 4 PE scheme.

As part of our PE curriculum, we provide all pupils from Reception through to Year 6 with access to discrete Karate lessons taught by Sensei. This develops children’s spirituality, independence and self-regulation. We also provide swimming for years 4, 5 & 6 during the Summer Term, where the children develop, at the very least, basic swimming skills and an awareness of safety in the water. We aim for all of our pupils to leave school, water confident and able to swim at least 25 metres.

Children in Year 6 can attend an annual residential visit to Arthog Outdoor Educational Centre. During these visits, pupils take part in outdoor and adventurous activities, which are organised and supervised by qualified members of
site staff. We provide a variety of opportunities for children to attend sporting afterschool clubs. We offer a range of
clubs across the year including football, hockey, netball, tennis, running and Karate. We also encourage and celebrate children taking part in sporting activities out of school and actively signpost children to specific activities or clubs that are appropriate for their interests and abilities.

Impact

The impact of the PE curriculum ensures that children meet age-appropriate skills in a range of physical activities. Our Physical Education ensures children develop transferable skills in a range of sports and in everyday life including staying fit and healthy both mentally and physically. PE is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that the children can succeed in all aspects of a holistic curriculum. This instils the importance of a physically active lifestyle demonstrating a clear awareness of the link between physical activity and positive mental wellbeing.

We have very high expectations for all our children, providing opportunities to compete in sport and other
activities, to build motivation, tolerance and embedded values such as courage, compassion, fairness and respect. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.

PE and Sport in our school

Karate

We are one of the few schools to use Karate to provide physical and coordination challenges in an inclusive manor whilst developing the social and emotional curriculum alongside the running of the school.

School Competitions

Children compete against different schools in various sports and there is an element of competition in most games lessons, allowing children an opportunity to compete in a ‘fun for all’ atmosphere.  As a school we aspire to follow the rule ‘Win with pride, lose with dignity. If we do so, we are all winners because of the taking part’.  This attitude is demonstrated particularly on our annual Sports’ days which are held during the summer term with all children in Key Stage 1 and 2 competing with children of similar abilities and separated into our 4 houses to add further excitement for the children.

Our Key Stage Two football Team who reached the quarter finals of the Telford and Wrekin Schools Trophy 2021-22 season.  Our Year 2 and 3 Cricket club entering the cricket tournament at Telford Tennis Centre.  Our Mixed netball Team from year 5 and 6 taking part at Telford Langley School.

Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons for Years 4, 5 and 6 take place during the summer term at Oakengates Leisure Centre where the children learn a variety of games, stroke techniques and survival skills.  During the last few sessions, the children are given the opportunity to earn their distance certificates and these are then awarded in our annual celebrations assembly.

Sports Ambassadors

They have contributed to the positive outcome in school such as improving playtime equipment and it's uses, supporting our Weekly mile Campaign (weather depending), supporting the running of Sports Day for Key stage 1 and 2. But Sports Councils most recent and influential campaign has been the designing of a new Sports Kit for the School for Key Stage 1 and Lower and Upper Key Stage 2, see above images. The Council ran a competition within school and chose a winning design from a pupil within the school.
