Spring 1

Spring 1 - A Child's War

This term, we will be focussing on our History unit which is called 'A Child's War'. This will focus on children during WW2. We will begin by looking at a timeline of key events and the roles of the countries who were involved, before focussing on evacuation, the roles of women and rationing. The children will even have the opportunity to create their own evacuee label and ration book.

In English, we will be linking our writing to our reading book 'An Eagle in the Snow' by Michael Morpurgo. We will be focussing on narrative writing and the skills involved, before combining these to write our own prequel of the class text. We will also use extracts from other novels to help us write a short story about an evacuee and their experiences.

In reading, we will be exploring the book 'An Eagle in the Snow' and will be using our VIPERS reading skills during reading lessons. In particular, we will be using our inference skills to determine how characters are feeling at certain stages of the book and drawing on the impression the author has created at key events.

In maths, we are focussing on our multiplication skills and division skills, using written methods to solve calculations. As you are aware, the children in year 4 are required to take an end of year multiplication test where they are required to know their multiplications fluently up to the 12 times tables so as much practise at home is very much appreciated. We will also be looking at place value and negative numbers, and measurement: length and perimeter.

In RE, we will be learning about Kingdom of God focusing on the concept of What kind of king was Jesus?  We will explore the Lord’s Prayer and its wider meaning.

In Science, we will be exploring mixtures by recapping our previous learning on solids, liquids and gases. We will use this knowledge to discuss the different types of mixtures that can be made. We will also be investigating the different methods of separating mixtures, such as, sieving and filtering. This will include making our own water filter!
