Ancient Greeks!

We have continued to explore ancient Greeks this half term and especially enjoyed another visit from the Steve Humphries. Here we took part in so many amazing ctivities and learnt so much about the weird and wonderful lives of our ancestors during the ancient Greek period.

Arts week.

Here we focused in particular on the skill of sketching. We practiced techniques in shading, line, tone and texture. Here are some of our amazing drawings based on the underworld. The scarab beetle was particularly important to the ancient Greeks and was placed on the bodies of the dead for their safe passage into the underworld.

Our class text this half term is  We are thoroughly enjoying this story and tells the tale of Ka, a cat that travels through time to help save Topher. The children explored the Babastis, which is the ancient cat that would be sacrificed and offered to the Gods. Here is a drawing using charcoal of the cat.

The ancient Egyptians would use papyrus paper, which was made of strips of papyrus wood, washed and squashed until it resembles very thin paper. This was the very first type of paper ever used by humans. We used some papyrus paper to draw some images onto. We sketched images of the ancients gods from the underworld as they prepared the bodies for their journey into the after life.
