This term, we will be focussing on history and Britain during WW1 and WW2.
Our topic is Britain at War.
Here, we will learn all about Britain’s involvement in the major wars to date. We will be able to use a range of sources to examine the consequences of these wars and how they impacted people’s lives and different countries.
In English, we will be exploring diary writing and getting into character as if we were a male volunteering or conscripted to be enlisted for WW1. We will explore a variety of WAGOLLs looking at the features, vocabulary and structure. We will use hot seating to help get into role of the character before writing our own diary. Later on in the term, we will explore letter writing and write letters to our families as if we were writing from the trenches.
This term in maths, we are continuing to consolidate our knowledge of fractions across all four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will be recapping on our mathematical vocabulary with words associated with fractions such as numerator, denominator, integer, mixed number. There will be plenty of opportunities to practise these skills during arithmetic practise and starter activities. We will later move on to ratio and proportion and explore their purpose in everyday life.
Our Science and PSHE topics are intertwined together this term looking at changing me and human reproduction. We will recap on puberty and how our bodies change and develop from childhood to adolescence. The children will be able to explore key scientific vocabulary and look at conception and how babies develop in the womb before birth. We will explore relationships and what qualities are valuable in a loving relationship between two individuals.
We had a fantastic time last week during our history workshop. The children got to learn lots of key historical facts involving both World Wars and loved taking part in role play and trying on uniforms. We learnt all about the white feather and we are going to incorporate this fact into our diary writing. The children loved learning about the involvement in different countries during the First World War and recreating the trenches using sandbags. Again, this is something that they will be able to use in their letter writing when getting into character as if they were a soldier in the trenches.
Today, we learnt all about Holocaust Memorial Day. We were saddened to hear about how Hitler deliberately discriminated against people he deemed weren’t the ‘perfect race’. We explored how this day is used to commemorate those people who lost their lives and how each year there is a new theme to remember this day. This year’s theme was Ordinary People; it signifies that ordinary people were penalised for their beliefs and race.
