English as an Additional Language

(EAL)

The Government's definition of an EAL learner includes –

“Anyone who has been exposed to a language other than English during early development and continues to be exposed to this language in the home or in the community”.

Here at St Matthews, we are committed to ensuring that every child succeeds and reaches their full potential. We are dedicated to raising the achievement and attainment of pupils with EAL enabling them to do the best they can within a positive, supportive and safe learning environment.

Vocabulary is one of the key building blocks in learning a new language and EAL learners of all ages and at all stages of English language proficiency need additional support to increase their vocabulary.  To help ensure pupils are reaching their full potential, class teachers use the Babcock LDP (In Early Years) and The Bell Foundation (In Key Stage 1 and In Key Stage 2) to assess the children’s English language Proficiency.  The links to these websites can be found below.

As a school we celebrate Global World Neighbours and once or twice a term we celebrate a different culture/ethnicity.  These are based on the different ethnicity groups we have in school each year.
