At St Matthew's we are very fortunate to have extensive woodland and outdoor areas in which to deliver Forest School. This is lead by our Forest school leader Mrs Vaughan.
About Forest School
Forest School is an inspiring learning opportunity that provides children with the opportunity to learn about the natural world and participate in a variety of outdoor activities.
‘Every child should have regular access to inspirational and challenging outdoor learning, where they can enjoy first hand experience of their cultural heritage and natural environment, as part of a full complete child’
There are a range of activities children can take part in such as mini beast hunts, wildlife identification, shelter building, woodland arts and crafts, tool use and cooking on a fire. Originally a Scandinavian idea children and adults can benefit in a range of ways emotionally, physically, socially and intellectually. It provides freedom to enjoy the natural world within a safe and secure environment.
Children who participate in Forest Schools will:
- Have better co-operation communication skills and social skills
- Have improved motivation and concentration
- Have increased confidence and self esteem
- Learn a variety of outdoor skills including the use of tools and fire lighting.
