St Matthew's C.E Primary School

“I can do all things because Christ gives me strength” Philippians 4:13

“Geography is a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant. For me geography is a great adventure with a purpose.”

At St Matthew’s Primary school, our school vision is to encourage all children to flourish spiritually, morally, emotionally, physically and intellectually in all aspects of life demonstrating perseverance and resilience; this is emulated across all curriculum areas.

At St Matthew’s Primary school, we provide all pupils with access to a high-quality Geography curriculum that supports them to develop a coherent knowledge and understanding of their local area and the wider world. The topics we study prepare the children for the wider world by developing their understanding of the increasing impact that humans have on our planet. By understanding their place in the world, it demonstrates the responsibility that our pupils have to protect it.

Our curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge of diverse locations, people, resources, natural and human environments, whilst embedding a deep understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. We promote an understanding of the local community as well as contrasting geographical places around the world. This raises global awareness and develops citizenship in our pupils.

Assessment in Geography

The assessment of geography is ongoing and helps to inform teachers’ planning.  Pupil’s knowledge and achievement is monitored throughout the lesson, misconceptions are tackled through questioning, marking and feedback.  All pupils are expected to and given time to respond to feedback.

Pre-assessments are used at the beginning of a new theme to find out what the children already know.

Teachers revisit previous learning at the start of each lesson. This informs staff of the pupils who need support in specific areas and the key knowledge or skills that need to be recapped.

Assessments are used at the end of a theme to assess the pupils’ knowledge and skills. This assessment data is used to inform further planning to ensure that all pupils are on track to meet end of key stage expectations.
