Remembrance Day at St Matthew's

“On Thursday 11th November, we took part in remembering those who died while fighting in various wars.
Our forces families led an assembly about why we celebrate Remembrance Day and the significance of why we wear poppies, and how we show respect on Poppy Day.

After the assembly, at 11am, KS2 and KS1 students joined together to host a 2 minutes silence on the playground where Mr Jackson read the poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. After this our year 2 teacher Miss Scully played the Last Post to mark the start of the two minutes silence. We all stood still, even the workers on the roof paid their respects as it was such an important day.

To mark the end of the proceedings, Miss Scully played the Reveille on the cornet and Mrs Clark finished with a speech.
In honour of Remembrance Day, year 4 created their own poppy badges out of salt dough for the soldiers (the red poppy) and the millions of animals who lost their lives during past conflicts (the purple poppy) and the white poppy which symbolises all victims.
“When you go home tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow we gave our today”

Classes spent all day learning about the importance of remembrance day and here is some of the work we completed`
